Lorem Ipsum Generator

Placeholder text at the length you need — paragraphs, sentences or words, plain or wrapped in HTML tags.

How to generate placeholder text

  1. Choose whether you want paragraphs, sentences or words.
  2. Set how many — up to fifty.
  3. Tick Wrap paragraphs in p tags if the text is going straight into an HTML template.
  4. Press Generate, then copy the result or download it. Pressing Generate again produces a different passage.

The word counter at the bottom tells you how long the passage turned out, which is useful when a design calls for a specific length rather than a specific number of paragraphs.

Where Lorem Ipsum comes from, and why designers still use it

The text is a scrambled excerpt of a first-century BC work by Cicero, De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum. The words are Latin, but they were altered and shuffled in the sixteenth century to produce a passage that looks like prose without being readable as a coherent sentence. That accident is exactly what made it useful: it has the rhythm and letter distribution of real Latin, so it fills a page convincingly, while meaning nothing.

That is also why designers still reach for it. Real text competes with the layout for the reader's attention. When you are judging a grid, a type scale or the balance between a heading and its body copy, the meaning of the words is noise. Placeholder text removes that distraction and lets the eye settle on the things the mockup is actually testing — the line lengths, the white space, the rhythm between elements.

There is one important limit. Placeholder text belongs in design work and nowhere else. If it survives into something a visitor can see, it costs you twice: a search engine indexes those words as your content, and a person reading the page receives a clear signal that the site was never finished. Treat the moment the real copy arrives as the end of the mockup's life.

Lorem Ipsum FAQ

Why use Lorem Ipsum instead of real text?

Because readable text competes with the layout. When the words mean nothing, attention goes to the spacing, line lengths and hierarchy — which is what the mockup is there to test.

Is it real Latin?

Almost. It is a scrambled excerpt from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum. The words are Latin, but they were shuffled, so it does not read as a coherent sentence.

Should placeholder text stay on a live site?

No. It is for design work only. Once a page is public it needs real content, because search engines index the words and visitors judge the site by them.

What does the HTML option do?

It wraps each paragraph in a pair of p tags so the text can be pasted straight into an HTML template instead of being wrapped by hand.
